Open Oak woodlands with Calamagrostis porteri scattered in patches down to saddle (GWNF.35). Red Oak - Witch Hazel, Oak - Mt. Laurel cliffs on VA side. Some weeds along trail (Polygonum caespitosum).;SW aspect of high knob along the ridgeline of Great North Mtn. Community is an open forest or woodland of Pitch and Table Mt. Pine with some Chestnut Oak in canopy. Dense shrub understory is dominated by Serviceberry, Bear Oak, and Huckleberry. Red Oak regen in short shrub layer. Pine is likely successional without disturbance. Deep litter and duff, little coarse woody debris, but no evidence of fire seen. Some pine regen in S2 & S1.
Representativeness
Small patch of Pine forest. One of few Pitch Pine stands I have seen in WV not dominated by Mountain Laurel in shrub layer.
